After getting an email from Alex Fitzgerald that he was playing the Borgata Open and the MD Live WPT Main Event, I decided that this would be as good a time as any to get back into the live tournament game. I will probably not attempt the Main Event this time around as I'm sure I'm as rusty as a bucket of old nails but I will be playing at least 2 Deepstack events and maybe the 6-max event. I'm hoping to meet Alex there and would be happy to meet up with any other APT members who may be going to any of the events.

So, if anyone is coming to one or more of the tournaments and would like to meet a fellow APT member, please post on this thread and we'll arrange to meet up and play some poker. The Borgata is a great place to play so if anyone is interested, look at the schedule and see if there's a game for you. It would be great to have a few people from the site at this great event.

Here's the link to the schedule of events: https://www.theborgata.com/casino/poker/tournaments/BORGATA-poker-open-2018/schedule

@krista - thanks for the support. I'm actually looking forward to it. I'm in no way physically or mentally "ready" but its time to start doing more than just training. It was a very unplanned decision as the Open kicks off on Tuesday but Alex's email just lit a fire in me. I want to play again. Win, lose or make a fool of myself, I want to be on the tables again. I didn't know just how much until now.

Sorry you can't make it but I'll keep you posted. Still trying to decide exactly which events to enter. There are many great ones but I want to be realistic about my stamina. I would love to play in the Almighty Stack event, with 1000BB's to start but I doubt my body or mind can do a 3-day tournament so I probably won't enter it. After I play a 1-day event, I'll see how I feel. If I think I'd have enough left in the tank, I'll enter the 6-max tournament, which is a 2-day event. That's only a maybe. The last thing I want to do is push my body farther than its ready to go and prolong my recovery.

Woohoo! Let's get the cards in the air and bring on Lynn Gilmartin :)

    for rookies like me
i try play a higher level than i familiar... $16.50 above my normal
but i love it! 3 hours of fun poker and no one playing crazy

i urge you play at that level if you can makes for more - poker, isn't an all-in fest

in the event today i played solid... stuck to my ranges and got to the final 10%
i think i made few errors until i get to top position and be a bit cocky
like hey i have chips let me push it
twice i defeated with 99... both times i think i behind but what the hell... i have chips
    poor decisions

    i invested $16.50 won $50.37

but i think if i had stuck to my game plan,, rather than loosen it cause i have top chips i could have done better

rookies like me i suggest ... play a higher level, two reasons...
    1. you have higher possible wins
    2. you find players that serious and no play maniac

i had a great evening of poker

    hugs

Good for you. I remember you scolding me for saying there was a difference between player pools. I think you just experienced what I was talking about. IMO, below a certain level, the game is more random than anything else. It looks like you just found a game where there is more strategy and less reliance on luck. You got to play some poker. Fun, isn't it? Welcome to the game :)

Keep going strong and enjoy it.

Can't help myself - I'm going to play the 1st event tomorrow morning. It will be Day 1D of a 3-day tournament. Probably biting off more than I can chew but its a great format and I'm eager to get to it. 2nd event will be Saturday. Both are deepstack formats.

LOL - no problem @krista . You are in good shape here. Pay attention to stack sizes and choose your spots well. Tighten up your calling ranges and loosen up your opens. The advantage is always to the initial aggressor because of the gap concept. Use that knowledge to your advantage.

@krista - just finished dinner. Sorry to have kept you waiting. Also, I didn't advance to day 2 so nothing exciting to report. I didn't play poorly and I wasn't card-dead. There were a few hands I could have played differently but all in all I'm ok with how it went. Sorry if I let y'all down.

One thing I have to make an adjustment with is something we've talked about here - balance. I actually think I worked a few too many bluffs into my game for the tables I played on. I don't have anywhere close to the theoretically optimal ratios of bluffs to value and my frequencies were still too high for this game. My bad because I didn't adjust in time for it to matter. As I reviewed the hands in my head, I actually liked the plays I made from a theory standpoint. As a practical matter, I should have shut down some of them sooner and conceded the pots.

Back to the drawing board! My next event is tomorrow and its a bounty tournament. I wasn't planning on playing in it but since I'm here and not doing anything … lol. Actually, I plan to play some cash games while I'm here because there's action to be had. I'd like to win enough to cover my tournament entries so I'd be freerolling them. We'll see.

Tourneys were promoted to get players to vegas and then get them to cash games.) Love playing tourney players in cash games. Go get 'em.

That's why cash games are called ring games - tournament players who busted out would set up cash games in a ring around the room. Yeah, tourney players are usually pretty soft targets but they can be uber-nits as well. I had some rest so I'm heading down to play now. Next event doesn't start until 1pm so as long as I don't play too long I'll be fine for tomorrow.

@highfive - Maybe I should skip the tournaments and just play cash? 2 1/2 hour session at 10/20 and made over 3 buy-ins (and I tip really well). LOL. I could freeroll the Main Event now. People were throwing chips around like they were tournament chips. I'm thinking to myself "do they know these are real money? Do they know they can get up and cash out dollar for dollar?" The bluffing frequencies from earlier served me really well. I not only ran a few sick bluffs through but I also got paid huge when I actually had monster hands.

One hand I raised 7/5s from the CO and the BB 3-bet me on the smallish side so I called IP. Flop is 9 6 3 2-tone so I have a double gutter but no flush draw. He c-bets 50% and I flat. Turn is a lovely offsuit 4 and now I not only have the nuts but its also very disguised. He fires the turn for 2/3rds and I flat. River is a K so flush draw on board didn't get there. He fires the 3rd barrel and I raise, praying he has AA or AK and calls me. Nope, he comes over the top all-in (I snap call of course). He turns over KK. OMG! The worst hand he could possibly have had because it forced him to jam into the nuts when he thought he was jamming for value. I almost felt bad for a second. Almost ;)

If I wasn't so tired I'd keep playing. I may actually skip the bounty tournament and see how the action is. If I can get some of the same people playing and maybe even get some into a 25/50 game, I'll move in here for the next 2 weeks. A guy could make a decent living doing this - just following the tournament circuit but only playing the cash games. Hmmm … I wonder if anyone is doing that already?

    Nice hourly there @1warlock. )
So a player at 10/20 that plays absolute value instead of relative value? Hmmm Dream scenario!

" Almost felt bad " means you didn't feel bad. Hehehe Truth bomb.

Raising 75s in the cut-off? That's a little loose there. (Love it) Some say separator str8s have the highest implied odds. Agreed?)

I'm not following a circuit to play cash but it had occurred to me. Question: Where is there lots of NLH action with rolled players who aren't that good?
    Answer: tournament circuit current location.)
    Keep it in Beast Mode.

Thanks. Yeah, I could be "comfortable" at $2400/hr. LOL. Never runs like that forever but its sure fun when it happens, especially after busting out of a tournament and getting nothing.

To be fair, the guy was not a bad player at all. There is no way he could think top set was bad there. From the look on his face when I tabled my cards, he was genuinely shocked. If the hands were reversed, he would have stacked me. Who looks at that board and sees a straight in a 3-bet pot? I had all the sets until the river and I would have played any of them the exact same way and had the opposite result.

7/5s is a standard open for me from the CO in a cash game, especially when everyone is fairly deep. I love suited gappers in position. You have to play them carefully because sometimes they can make less than the nuts, even when you get there. You have to be willing to bluff with them on a ton of flops that many players just won't. For instance, with 7c5c as the initial aggressor I'd c-bet on flops like Ac 8h 3h with backdoor flush and straight potential if called. Most people would check this one back and give up on it. The other key is to get maximum value those times you do actually have the nuts. Anyway, I don't know what hands have the greatest implied odds but medium suited gappers have to be near the very top. Don't bleed money when you whiff and extract maximum when you hit.

The other bonus from playing them is that once people see you showing down with them, you get credit for being able to represent strong hands across all boards. I can't get check-raised with impunity when I c-bet into a 9-high flop. Against players who are too heavy in the Ax and Broadway hands, check-raising a flop like that would be a great play. 9 times out of 10 that player has 2 over cards and nothing else.

Didn't play the bounty tournament today. I actually had to work most of the day. Unplanned but that's what happens when you sneak away for a poker trip at the last minute :) I'm so used to working from here that its not a big deal for me, even though their "business center" is nearly worthless. I'll go and play some cash tonight and then play the Saturday tournament tomorrow. After that, I'll see whether I want to stay longer or go home and come back for the next event. It may be a good idea for me to stay here as I won't have to deal with all the 9/11 coverage on TV. I can't watch any of it and the days leading up to it are usually miserable for me if I'm not occupied with other things.

    you gotta be kidding?
you were playing for monopoly money or you drinking again?

ok you going to play VERY loose, and play 75s FI in position... fair enough but wow
BB - 3Bets you... and you call????? come on

flop gives you two inside straight draws, whats that under 25% to complete, yes terrific percentage for sure... so the BB CBets 1/2 the pot, and you with such brilliant odds call that with basically tied for 9 high?

so now the pundits and commentators here will applaud such aggression and brilliant play?

and you tell me... best player - not luck wins? and what happened with all the math and EV analysis?

    shakes head

let me add 25% complete straight by the river... 12% or so on next card and yup you going call a river bet/shove?
