As of November 2021, the APT Forum is closed to new posts. Like with many online forums, usage has decreased in recent years. All previous posts are still available.
With the benefit of hindsight, I ran this through Flopzilla for practice:
Preflop: Caro in the SB means a narrow range (18%) AA-33,AKo-ATo,KQo-KTo,QJo-QTo,T9o,AKs-ATs,KQs-K9s,QJs-Q9s,JTs-J9s,T9s,98s,87s,76s. He made a check/raise so I take nothing off the top of his range and nothing off the bottom. He is tricky and could be raising the bottom of his range, and as it turns out, he did. Check/raises don’t usually indicate bottom of the villain's range. He raised 3X your bet which is strong. Your initial $4000 bet seems right to me, 3bb plus 1bb for the limper ahead of you.
Preflop, you start out ahead with equity of 56% to his 44%.
Postflop: You pair your ace and have a strong kicker with BkDr SD and FD and you could pick up a strong second pair with a queen. The possibility of him having AK hurts your equity which is now 42/58. He proceeds with sets, two pair, top pair, middle pair, FD + pair, and FD; AA,JJ,33,AKo-ATo,AKs-ATs,KhJh,KhTh,Kh9h,JhTh,Jh9h,Th9h,9h8h,8h7h,7h6h. His near pot sized bet indicates strength.
The Turn pairs your queen and you value bet a ½ pot. A pot sized bet would have yielded you more information which may have gotten you to fold and save money. Your equity to his range goes up 68/32. He continues with %100 of the previous range AA,JJ,33,AKo-ATo,AKs-ATs,KhJh,KhTh,Kh9h,JhTh,Jh9h,Th9h,9h8h,8h7h,7h6h. His FD are reduced. He bets 2.5X your bet so either a bluff or more warning. Your equity is so high you decided to call. Your pot odds are 10 to 1.
The River is a brick, your equity increases to 70% but he has a set.
You lose in spite of playing correctly. There were warnings. Call it poker.
I would mostly divy this hand up to being a cooler... However one slight debatable mistake is that you didn't 4 bet preflop which probaby would have induced a fold. AQ is a strong hand, especially heads up, IN POSITION. Gain information.
